Losing to Gain!

“Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for My sake will find it.” – Matthew 10:39 (NIV)

Following Jesus is not simply about adding Him to our lives — it is about surrendering our lives completely to Him. In Matthew 10:32-39, Jesus presents a powerful and sobering truth: the path to true life requires loss. It is a divine paradox — “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for Jesus’ sake will find it.”

Jesus begins by emphasising the importance of publicly confessing Him. Faith is not meant to be hidden. To follow Christ is to stand for Him openly, even when it is uncomfortable. Our allegiance to Jesus should be evident not only in our words but in our lives. A transformed life becomes visible evidence of a genuine relationship with Him. As believers, we are called to live in such a way that there is no doubt to whom we belong.

Yet Jesus does not present discipleship as easy. He clearly states that His message, while rooted in peace, will bring division. The “sword” He speaks of is not one of violence, but of separation. The Gospel draws a line between those who accept Christ and those who reject Him. Sometimes, this division reaches into the closest relationships — families. This is not because Jesus desires conflict, but because loyalty to Him must come above all else.

This is one of the most challenging aspects of following Christ: loving Him supremely. Jesus says that anyone who loves father, mother, son, or daughter more than Him is not worthy of Him. These are strong words, reminding us that even good things — like family — can become idols if they take God’s rightful place in our hearts. True devotion means that Jesus is first, above every relationship, ambition, and desire.

For us today, taking up our cross means dying to self — our pride, our control, our plans — and living fully for Christ. It means choosing obedience when it is difficult, faith when it is costly, and trust when it is uncertain. It’s about discovering our true identity in Him.

When we lose our lives for Christ’s sake, we actually find life — real, abundant, eternal life. What we surrender cannot compare to what we gain. Today, value your obedience to Christ above all.

Prayer

Father, I surrender everything to You. Help me to choose You above all else, to follow You without hesitation, and to trust that in losing my life for Your sake, I will truly find it, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
